I didn’t think of the term ‘Mid Life’ at the age of 40. I gave it scant regard at age 45.
It wasn’t until I turned 50, that I started to embrace the term ‘Mid Life’. It sort of grew on me and I accepted that the calendar of life was moving on.
Now, depending on the source, the ages that Mid Life encompasses, does vary. I noted that one particular “study” determined Mid Life to be from age 40 to age 67.
67 suits me fine, I don’t want any ‘old age’ tag before my time is due.
At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter what “category” you consider yourself to be in or indeed when Mid Life starts for you. I don’t particularly like being categorised and you might not either. You can be young at heart for your whole life ….. age is only a number, not a determination of who you are or should be.
Let’s just look at the years 40 – 67. For the purposes of this post we will call them The Mid Life Years … and that’s a pretty fair & mostly obvious description. These 27 years, regardless of “Age tag” form a critical and vital part of your life.
I wrote a post a little while back “40 – 60 an age when everything matters ” ….. where I detailed a number of important points to consider for your Mid Life years. You may like to revisit this post as it adds to the one you are currently reading.
Mid life can be a transition period, in fact it is. Your first 40 years is spent building, Mid life then consolidates … so that you can enjoy the “later years”. That’s how the story is supposed to go, right?
However your Mid life can also be a fresh start, in fact it is becoming more so … and I have found that to be exciting!
If you look at life through the traditional lense, the stages of life have simply followed each other .. Child > Adult> Midlife > Old age ….. Boring.
Is there anything to say that your Mid Life story cannot have the “child/adult” mix as well?
The enthusiasm for learning, playing, building, creating are still there for you, if you want it. Because you hit the Mid life years doesn’t mean that you can’t have a fresh start. And we are seeing that a lot these days. Careers are being knee capped for many, meaning that a fresh start is becoming compulsory.
Time to ….. Listen. Question. Create.
If you are in need of a fresh start whether by choice or not, then …..
This is a time to listen to your inner voice [you may as well]. This is a time to question what has gone before and whether that continues or whether a new path is to be trodden. This is a time to create Art that you can be proud to display. Art that will define you. Art that will be talked about by others. This is a time of embracing what your life can give you. Why the hell not?
This may well be the “start” that you have been looking for. A Fresh canvas. Draw on your skills, discover new ones. Push the boundaries. Explore your Imagination.
Sound a bit “woo woo”? I hope not. It’s really practical when you think about it. I’m not suggesting that you do anything that you are not capable of. In fact, I am suggesting that you are capable of … starting again, pushing your boundaries, exploring your Imagination and utilising your skills in a different way … and discovering new skills.
This is a Mid Life story with a difference. This is the new Mid Life. This can be your story if your current one is not reading right. Even if things are rosy right now (and that’s great), you can be (re) assured that you can still add new volumes to your current story, if you want.
In Summary, Mid Life can open up many new possibilities, if you work at it. On top of what I have already mentioned, if I could select 3 takeaway “ideals” for you to consider, it would be these …..
* Set the goals that matter for You
* get your priorities in the right order, time is not infinite
* develop or polish your end game … know what it is, know where you are heading
Can these suggestions help you in your MidLife? Are you having trouble “coming to grips” with your MidLife years? Let me know what you think in the comments below and/or contact me if you would like some help. I’d appreciate you sharing this content with those who you feel will benefit.
