Life Goals – 4 key ingredients for achievement … the nuts & bolts

A few weeks back I was talking about “Kicking your Goals in 2013”. Goal2

Let’s drill down a little further.

Setting a goal and achieving a goal are two different things. Anyone can set a goal. Having said that, I know that when you set a goal correctly, achievement is virtually assured. The “correctness” is where this is won. This is where achievement often goes astray.

Let me explain.

There are four(4) key areas that I would suggest that you concentrate on when setting a goal.

Reward….will it (this particular goal) aid my personal growth? Will it satisfy my soul(give me the warm fuzzies) and will it give me the results that I want in my Life right now and when I achieve the goal? (timeframe)

Value…..The time spent on achieving your goal has to be worth it. Are you prepared to spend the time necessary to work toward your goal achievement? Commitment to the task or tasks involved in working through the goal process needs to be unwavering. If you are not commited or do not have or are not willing to spend the time…..then do something else.

Excitement…..fuels ongoing motivation. Be excited about  setting a goal that will give your Life great results. If it doesn’t excite you then find something that does. One of the main destroyers of goal achievement is the lack of ongoing motivation. It can wane after a period of time. When the excitement is there, you can’t wait to achieve your goal, then motivation shouldn’t be a problem.

Key point here…don’t just be excited about setting your goal...feel the excitement upon achieving your goal.

Meaning…..why you do it, the difference it will make, the pleasure, the joy, give me more of this type of feeling. A Goal without meaning, is no goal at all. Meaning will vary for each of us. When true meaning is applied….It’s deep. It’s truthful. There’s no avoiding it. It lights your fire.

Here’s the link to a short (60 second) video that I did about 4 months ago (pre haircut) that illustrates these pointers…

How are you doing with your Goals? Do they excite You? I’d love to hear from you & also would be honoured if you will share this post on your favourite social media channels.

Meaning, your WHY; this is by far the most important aspect of any goal. Make it personal, make it visceral, make it REAL. Saying: “I want to get healthy” won’t do it; but saying:” I want to see my daughter grow up and live to walk her down the aisle” will help you start the difficult journey to health. This, of course, can be applied to all kinds of goals, but it can’t be overlooked. 🙂

    Hi David,

This was lovely post, my friend. I really appreciate the way you explained the key ingredients needed to make our goals real. I think all 4 points you mentioned are very important. I’m carrying out a business goal at the moment, and I’ve just taken it through your 4 points, and it’s inspired me to continue with the journey.

I enjoyed watching your video, too.

    Thank you.
